100% Buildable—If You Study the Instructions CarefullyEricaDespite many negative reviews about this unit’s construction, I followed a few positive ones that shared practical assembly tips and emphasized careful attention to the instructions. Result: 100% SUCCESS. The key is to follow the visual instructions very closely and take your time. Assembly may take over 30 minutes, but ensuring each step is correct will pay off.
Helpful tips from other reviewers:
-Use pliers when bending the metal tabs
-Install the handles on each drawer before inserting them
-Use a Phillips screwdriver (3mm or wider); Some recommend an electric drill, but I did fine with a regular screwdriver
One issue: Step 11 in the manual is missing a critical step. The diagram instructs drilling a third screw into the caster panel (besides the two through the caster) but only shows this for three of the four corners. Be sure to secure all four screws, not just three. Otherwise you’ll have one extra screw left over and a wobbly cabinet.
PS: Color btwn lemon and canary yellow
Ok with a few flawsSarahThis is an alright unit once it is put together. However, there are a few flaws with the design. The drawers are flat pieces that have to be folded to but put together. This means the drawers are not solid, and have holes on either side where the metal is folded. The folded metal is then held together by folding tabs on the front and back shelf pieces. Unless you are extremely careful, you will almost definitely stab the front piece of the drawer while folding the tabs down (if you use a screwdriver, as suggested), ruining the look of the unit before you even get to use it.
Extremely Low QualityScottThe entire assembly is made by pushing tabs and bending the metal sheets. This obviously means the entire unit is made from weak, flimsy stamped metal. This isn't worth more than 20 dollars, let alone 80
Does the jobAdrianaBased on previous reviews, I thought this product was going to be very frustrating to put together. I preemptively saved a YouTube tutorial to ease this process and it took me 30-40 mins to build. The material it's made of leaves a lot to be desired... I thought it would be a bit sturdier. Some of the corners of the drawers and the unit itself came dented and/or chipped. IMO, I think it's fine for the price, color and what I'm using it for.
Overpriced Flimsy Drawer UnitHaipingI bought 2 units from two years ago and needed a matching third unit so order the same thing. It was only half this price like $35 from 2 years ago. IKEA marked up the price big time without changing anything. The quality is really nothing like worth $40 or more. Let alone double the price. Don’t waste your money. At least don’t buy it without deep discount.
Wished this was betterCristinaI bought this for nail polish. I expected a higher quality since its literally almost $100. Its all kept together with tabs that you push down. Meaning that the sliders are held together in the cabinet with tabs that work as hooks into little squares in the walls. The only screws you add are the ones for handle and wheels. I really really wanted to like this but the only good thing about it is that its metal. Its not worth it because its $80 bucks and it can fall apart so easily. Im so disappointed. I really expected better. If you're thinking about buying this for polish, I would suggest against it and choose something else
Get ready for extra work and frustrationAnonymous reviewerThe unit is cute. The yellow is more on the buttery side than the lemon, so it isn't too bright or juvenile. I got this to organize desk things and craft things, and it's perfect for that. Everything I like about it gets 5 stars. However, assembly is awful. The drawer rails barely hang in place, and a slight bump on the unit will send them all crashing down before you can complete the assembly. Further, the rails refuse to stay in place even when fully assembled. Within a day, I had rails off one drawer, and that caused a cascading effect for the bottom three. The casters are also difficult to attach. Also, the front of the drawers have a spot for label cards, but it's an irregular size. Those should have been included. Everything about assembly gets 1 star, hence my overall 3 stars. But I do have a tip. When you get the rails in place, run a bead of epoxy along each one to attach it firmly and let that cure overnight before continuing. Then you'll have a nice little unit.
Not worth it...Anonymous reviewerLooks are deceiving. From the photo, product looks great. Unfortunately, quality isn't. Cheap metal and one of the most flimsiest installs of any Ikea item I have ever owned. Drawers don't close properly and top slides off when moved. If I knew before hand, I wouldn't be stuck with some junk I can't return. Ikea, you have make some serious improvements on this.
Don't waste your moneyAnonymous reviewerHonestly a waste of my money and I am literally throwing them (yes I bought 2) away tomorrow in the trash. The assembly was mostly garbage and the drawers do not in any way close cleaning upon the unit. S
Little flimsyJulietMust read and understand all instructions before attempting to assemble. If you make a mistake, the product will be ruined
I love the IKEA helmer and I have some tips for assembly if you're unsure based on reviews!RobinFor anyone who's unsure about assembling based on the reviews, here are my tips as a disabled person who can build one in less than an hour:
1. use a power screwdriver for attaching the casters! Technically, you only need a regular screwdriver to assemble these, but it can be very challenging and frustrating to get those screws to go through the metal holes with just hand strength.
2. Use pliers to bend tabs. More control means it's safer and easier than using a screwdriver.
3. The rails snap in after you slide the notches together, but it's not immediately obvious from the instruction book.
4. You may need to study the images in the instruction book closely to get your pieces oriented correctly. The images are all accurate to the pieces you have in terms of small details shown, you just have to look carefully. Take your time!
5. I recommend attaching the handles to the fronts of the drawers before assembling the drawers entirely. It's just easier to maneuver them this way.
Beautiful color however not functional ZenathVery hard to install
Low QualityDennisI have purchased several item from IKEA over the last 15 years and this item definitely does not live up to the quality that I have come to expect. It is poorly designed, poorly manufactured, and the assembly instruction were incomplete and inaccurate.
For $80 I would like more quality AmieThis drawer unit does serve its purpose but for the same price as the Alex drawer unit it is lacking. This unit is all metal and you have to fold the drawers origami style. It is almost impossible to fold them without a warp so they will easily be a bit wonky when sliding in and out when placed in the unit. Also, there is a tab you can push out on the sides of the drawers to keep them from pulling all the way or once they’ve been placed, but the tabs are too far forward so it’s hard to see or reach to the back of the drawer. I would like the “stop” tabs to be placed a bit further back so you can better access the back of the drawers. Also, the wheels on this unit, for carpet, are worthless. Compared to the Alex unit, I liked that it had more drawers and there were all the same size. It holds quite a lot and was easy to put together. I’m still happy with my purchase.
Decent quality for 1/3 the price of the originalKaiThe original drawer cabinet that this is modeled on is 3x the price. So overall, for the same functionality, you have to assemble it yourself and IKEA cut a few corners to get something that could be flat packed and DIY.

Ignore the reviews that say this is difficult to put together. It is a 30-40 minute project and really only requires a screwdriver and if you're picky a pair of pliers. Why are there negative reviews about assembly? Well the way we get to "average" intelligence is there is a sizable portion of the population that is below average. These are the people complaining about assembly of this Helmer cabinet.

So what could IKEA improve? The tap and slot arrangement for the top cover isn't very secure. I also do not like the drawer stop tab position, as I feel it is too far forward and easily grabbing things in the back 1/3 of the drawer.
was damaged out the boxYenbought 2 blue ones before and liked them, never used the drawer stoppers though because you can barely open the drawer with them on. bought another one and this one arrived quite damaged. luckily since they’re metal i was able to to bend back into shape most of the damage with pliers, but it definitely ruined the smoothness of the drawers as now they’re hard to open. i probably could’ve returned and got another but it had already taken a while to deliver. imo these shouldn’t cost more than $40. overall, i will probably still recommend and will most likely buy another. lol
Great Cabinet!KathyI’m not sure what all the kvetching is about. I watched a video of someone demonstrating how to assemble the product on YouTube, and I was able to put it together quickly and easily with no issues with the final product. Fits perfectly under my bathroom sink. Great for storing small items about the height of a bottle of nail polish.
Perfect DeylimarI loved
Cool little file cabinet GaryI actually bought this to organize my cables. I have a bunch that are laying around in boxes. Overall, it a decent little cabinet. Not your typical ikea build since it’s all metal. It definitely requires some patience but overall I am happy with it
held together with gravity and hopeAnneAluminum screws strip as soon as you look at them, and don't fit the holes. Little metal tabs to hold it together: great idea, awful in practice. (Needlenose pliers helped, a little.) Drawers on rails that slot in place, very easy to knock askew. I don't know why I didn't read the reviews before I bought it! But it's a very nice blue, and returning it would be more trouble than it's worth.
