Gorky Gonzalez was born in Morelia, Mexico, in 1939, studied the arts, and became dedicated to reviving traditional Colonial Majolica pottery. This double-glaze technique was adored during the Spanish colonial era and Gorky viewed it as a lost craft of significant cultural importance. In 1965, with his wife Toshiko, he established a workshop focused on Majolica. Nearly 50 years later, Gorky Gonzalez Pottery continues to be celebrated for quality and authenticity. Recognized as one of Mexico's influential ceramic studios, Gorky's legacy earned the National Award of Science and Arts in Popular Art and Traditions in 1992.
