Gorky Gonzalez Majolica Plate - 12 Diameter

$76.45

Born in Morelia, Mexico, in 1939, Gorky Gonzalez was an arts student who in the 1960s focused on reviving Colonial Majolica. This traditional double-glaze pottery technique gained popularity in Italy and was important during Spanish colonization. Gorky viewed Majolica as a nearly forgotten craft vital to the region's cultural and historical identity. In 1965, with his wife Toshiko, Gorky established a ceramic workshop committed to traditional Majolica. Nearly 50 years later, quality and authenticity still define Gorky Gonzalez Traditional Pottery. Today, Gorky Pottery is esteemed as a significant ceramic studio in Mexico, and in 1992, Gorky received Mexico's National Award of Science and Arts for Popular Art and Traditions.
