Eero Saarinen, in the 1930s, developed a series of plywood chairs with organic shapes. These designs were soon celebrated, winning the 1940 Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition supported by MoMA. Inspired by this, Saarinen designed a chair that aimed to deliver superior comfort.
