Saarinen Executive Leather Armchair - Wood Legs Vegan Leather-White / Natural Ash

$779.00

In the 1930s, Eero Saarinen developed a series of uniquely-shaped plywood chairs. These chairs later won the 1940 Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition sponsored by MoMA. Inspired by this success, Saarinen designed a chair that offered exceptional comfort based on its shape alone. The luxurious, sculptural Executive Side Chair and the coordinating Executive Armchair resulted from this endeavor. The design was awarded the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award and the German Federal Award for Industrial Design.

Eero Saarinen described architecture as a means to enrich and dignify human life and expressed this philosophy in significant midcentury modern works. After immigrating from Finland in 1923 with his family, he settled in the U.S., where his father co-founded the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Eero apprenticed there, graduating with an architecture degree from Yale in 1934. Despite criticism for adapting his style to suit clients' needs, Saarinen saw his clients as collaborators in pushing modernism's limits. Prominent projects included corporate and educational buildings, reflecting postwar optimism. His career ended prematurely due to his death at 51 in 1961 from a brain tumor. His team completed his unfinished work, and his legacy was revived with a Yale exhibition in 2002.
