Mid-Century Italian Model Aedes Double-Sided Shelf in Teak by Amma Torino, 1950s
The minimalist yet elegant and highly functional wall unit "Aedes" was produced by the Italian manufacturer Amma Torino in the 1950s. The name "aedes" is derived from the Latin word for "tiger mosquito," known for its distinctive black and white markings, which may be a reference to the unit's metal construction. The characteristic bend in the lower part of the rails also bears a resemblance to the shape of a mosquito's legs. The set includes: a bar cabinet: H: 42 / W: 76 / D: 32 cm (depth when fully open: 70 cm) a dresser: H: 24 / W: 76 / D: 33 cm (height of drawers: 8 cm) 6 shelves, each 28 cm deep 3 metal rails, each 220 cm long assembly accessories. Crafted from rich teak, this wall unit features an impressively spacious cabinet with drop-front doors and an inner shelf, along with a small dresser with two drawers. The masterfully dovetailed joint drawers’ fronts, and integrated handles showcase the artistry of Italian craftsmen. Additionally, it includes six deep shelves ideal for displaying books and decorations. All of these features make it an extremely functional and visually well-balanced piece of furniture. with its teak-veneered back, it is completely double-sided, making it suitable for use as a functional room divider. The uprights are made of black-painted curved metal tubing, ensuring excellent durability and longevity, while adjustable brass feet provide stability on uneven floors. The genius of its design lies in its modularity; the Aedes collection is entirely modular, allowing for easy customization. All components are movable and can be placed higher or lower. The slots, positioned at regular intervals (each 8 cm), enable intuitive assembly and expansion of the bookcase with additional sections. The bookcase is in excellent condition, with only minimal traces of use consistent with its age. We have ensured that all mechanisms work properly and smoothly. The wood has been carefully preserved.
