Chesterfield Modern Classic Sofa

Designers are pairing updated Chesterfield sofas with modern icons both mid century and contemporary. Updated Chesterfields are an exceptional option for use in modern decors. They offer a nod to tradition providing stature and stability while breaking out of the mold simultaneously. The use is also becoming very popular in eclectic spaces where a mixture of eras is the goal.

Making the Icon

The Kardiel reproduction is a careful study of the origin. It suggests that it takes more than tufting to define the Chesterfield. Generous proportions and a slightly understated roll in the arms combine with an updated seat rail and redefined wooden legs. The history of the Chesterfield Sofa dates back to the 18th century. Over time, the design has been reinterpreted in many different ways. The Kardiel Modern Chesterfield is without doubt a brilliantly respectful update on a classic sofa. This modern Chesterfield sits comfortably at home in any décor.

Genuine Top Grain Aniline Leather

A small percent of the world’s leather supply is of high enough quality for 100% Top Grain Aniline upholstered furniture. Aniline Dyeing is the process of soaking the hides in transparent aniline dyes which allows color to absorb into the natural hide. Top Grain Aniline leather is then topical stain protected to minimize liquid absorption during every day use but does not require imitation grain stamping methods which imprint a Faux grain over the majority of the leather surface. Without all the synthetic topical coatings, it breathes naturally making it comfortable for seating. It is soft, supple, durable and pliable, maintaining the characteristics of pure leather.

The Chesterfield origin story is not as definitive as you might think. It is likely closer to reality to call the origin an accepted theory as to its history. The story is likely accurate, at least in its broad base parts. The original deep button tufted Chesterfield design was likely created in the mid 1700’s, probably 1755 or shortly into the 1760’s. Lord Phillip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield in England had the original Chesterfield commissioned for his own royal residence. It is not clear who the original craftsman was nor how much actual input Lord Phillip had versus the actual creator. In other words, it is unclear whether Lord Phillip gave the exact design to the craftsman or gave a general idea of what he envisioned the piece to be. Over time, the design has been reinterpreted in many different ways. Reproductions with respect to the traditional style always will share low tooled wooden feet, deep tufting in the back and arms, a mono height (same height) back and arm frame, and rolled arms.

Going back to the origin of the Chesterfield story, “Mr. Dayrolles” was the godson of Phillip and had come to visit him on his deathbed. Legend has it that just before Lord Phillip Stanhope passed away on March 24th 1773, he ordered his personal butler to give “Mr. Dayrolles” a Chesterfield chair from the palace estate. Mr. Dayrolles carried the Chesterfield Chair home with him that very day. It is further theorized that his likewise aristocratic inner circle became aware of the chair from visitations and were so intrigued by its exceptional design that they commissioned craftsman to create replicas for themselves. Although not well documented, this story seems to be close to likely reality as the Chesterfield soon became the expected piece of furnishing for the elite and aristocratic in both England and its colonies from that time forward.

Regardless of its 18th century beginnings, the Chesterfield series adapts itself to a wide variety of modern interiors. There is no doubt that the Chesterfield is the classic icon of sofa designs. During its extensive history, it has never ceased production and has always held a prominent place in the libraries, dens and living spaces in the homes of aristocrats. As of late, it is making a significant impact on the design world being seen as an intriguing way to introduce juxtaposition, specifically bringing solidity and tradition to modern contemporary rooms.

This series is upholstered in premium Top Grain Aniline European leather. This is a significant upgrade in leather options. Top Grain is the actual surface of the cowhide. While no one knows the actual number, a small percentage of furniture sold today is upholstered in Premium Top Grain Aniline leather. Some claim as low as 5%. Aniline dying describes one of the two processes in which color is applied to the leather with the dye penetrating the leather and extending beyond the surface, into the leather itself. For modern furniture requiring a clean aesthetic, Top Grain Aniline Leather is both “liquid vat” (deep penetrating) and surface dyed to achieve the main color selection and to conceal uneven tones and blemishes in the hide. Top grain aniline is the softest leather and naturally breaths well. Because Top Grain refers to the actual surface of the animal hide it presents a natural leather appearance you would expect. While it is true that raw Top Grain Aniline absorbs spills easier, Furniture grade Top Grain leather features a stain resistant treatment making it exceptional for everyday lower maintenance use. Although rare, nothing wears, looks or feels better than premium Aniline Top Grain leather. Over time it patinas and becomes more comfortable versus wearing out.“Split Grain” is the most common leather used on furniture. This reproduction has been upgraded to Top Aniline leather and does not use Split Grain leather. Nonetheless, this paragraph will help explain the difference in quality and price between the leather types. Split Grain is the underside of the hide that has been separated from the surface or “top” of the hide. While defined as actual leather, Split Grain leather does not have the natural surface grain of the top of the cowhide. A topical layer of insoluble pigment is applied to the surface of split grain leather, which is then stamped or “grain embossed” to imitate the surface appearance of actual leather. This topical layer contains the color that the leather will be.
