Apollo Mid-Century Modern Chair

Apollo was the chair used by the chiefs of state in Europe during the EU summit in Copenhagen in Dec. 2002. A rare combination of organic expression and technical streamlining. The four upholstered shells give maximum support of the body with overt associations to both spinal column and ribs of the human anatomy. Due to its floating constellation, Apollo seems to be almost transparent and effortlessly blends in with the room.

Making the Icon

The original Apollo Chair was designed and went into limited production in 1962. Kardiel specializes in this series and understands fully the intricacies of the original design. Both the elliptical design of the chair and name, were inspired by a time-lapse photograph of a solar eclipse. This stunning reproduction has the unmistakable look of the original 1962 design. The essential design is a rare combination of organic expression, ergonomics, and technical streamlining. The four separate oval-shaped upholstered shells meet your back at specific ergonomic zones, providing comfort and support to the body and the spinal column. Apollo has a spine of its own running down the back of the chair, which joins the four shells together. The shells represent ribs and are attached to the spine embracing the ultimate design of human anatomy. The upholstery options are Top Grain Aniline leather or a wide range of Cashmere Wool Fabrics. The oval shells are heavily padded and made of molded polyurethane foam. The frame and legs are made from pure Stainless Steel metal.

The Apollo chair's debut has become quite the requested piece and has graced many movie screens, television, and even the latest music videos. It was the official chair used in 2002 at the Chiefs of State meeting at the EU summit in Copenhagen. It has become the original designer's most famous design to date, and it is a design that smoothly blends with any décor. About practicality, it exudes comfort and is now an incredibly unique icon.

ABOUT GENUINE TOP GRAIN ANILINE LEATHER

A small percent of the world’s leather supply is of high enough quality for 100% Top Grain Aniline upholstered furniture. Aniline Dyeing is the process of soaking the hides in transparent aniline, which allows color to absorb into the natural hide. Top Grain Aniline leather is then topical stain protected to minimize liquid absorption during everyday use but does not require imitation grain stamping methods, which imprint a Faux grain over the majority of the leather surface. Without all the synthetic topical coatings, it breathes naturally making it comfortable for seating. It is soft, supple, durable and pliable, maintaining the characteristics of pure leather.
