Originally designed in 1948, the molded shell chair earned 2nd place out of 3000 entries in the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art. The shell was designed to accommodate various base types. 'Dowel' refers to the Wooden Peg Leg design in this series. Wooden dowels include slots for the metal plates that attach to the underside. Wire cross bracing provides structural stability and adds an industrial design element. The chair features a wood and steel base with an ABS plastic shell that has a soft satin glow.
