Gorky Gonzalez Long Majolica Platter

Born in Morelia, Mexico, in 1939, Gorky Gonzalez was a student of the arts. In the early 1960s, he focused on reviving traditional Colonial Majolica, a double-glaze pottery technique popularized in Italy and favored during Spanish colonialism. Gorky saw traditional Majolica as a lost craft that was an important cultural and historical element of the region. In 1965, he and his wife Toshiko established a ceramic workshop dedicated to traditional Majolica. Nearly 50 years later, Gorky's commitment to quality and authenticity continues to define Gorky Gonzalez Traditional Pottery. Today, Gorky Pottery is one of Mexico's most influential ceramic studios, and in 1992, Gorky received Mexico's National Award of Science and Arts in Popular Art and Traditions.
