Vintage 1930s/40s Retro Art Deco Powder Compact, Dark Burgundy Red 'Circle In a Square' Design
Here is a truly splendid little find !! A Vintage 1930s/1940s Retro Art Deco square powder compact with a beautiful burgundy-red 'Circle in a Square' design on the front lid. The brass under the burgundy plastic cover has been burnished in the circle design so that the effect is rather like a CD in the way it reflects the light around the circle. Inside it is absolutely empty and quite shallow, indicating that it is an early loose powder only compact. It is not nearly deep enough to take the later pressed powder refill, so I am guessing 1930s for this. It is slim and rather tactile... The interior is very clean but this compact has been used in the past. The mirror has suffered a bit if water staining as you can see from my internal close-up, and it has a bit of fogging too, so this is not in perfect condition unfortunately. However, the mirror can be replaced quite easily... This is a gorgeous little compact, and is an exceptionally fine piece of work. I have no idea who made this... I love this as it's so utterly elegant and sophisticated, and I can certainly imagine a fashionable woman with this in her handbag !! This is truly a fabulous bit of 1940s/50s Retro design, and if you collect vintage powder compacts because of the beautiful designs, this is a bit of a corker !!
