Lupita Tortillera

$69.95

Originating in the 1800s, Lupita dolls were crafted from paper mache as a more affordable alternative to porcelain dolls. These traditional Mexican handicrafts are still made today by a select group of artists. The name Lupita comes from the diminutive form of the popular girls' name Guadalupe, likely chosen due to its commonality. These dolls were used by children to mimic household chores and were toys for the less affluent. Each Lupita doll was unique, crafted by numerous artisan families. For over a century, hand-crafted Lupita dolls were sold in Mexico City and other major markets, maintaining their popularity until plastic toys emerged. Nowadays, Lupita dolls are primarily decorative. Made of ceramic and intricately adorned, they serve as nostalgic items displayed for comfort and good fortune. They continue to reflect the daily life of Mexico, from small villages to bustling cities, holding significance beyond being mere children's toys.
