Roche Mid-Century Modern Sofa Loveseat

Roche is a well-recognized modernist icon designed in 1928 for the Maison La Roche house in Paris. Like the original design, Roche was revolutionary in its construction, built without a wooden frame. The entire loveseat is built around the cushions with a metal exoskeleton and base network, "spring webbing." Remarkably comfortable, Roche was aptly dubbed “cushion baskets.”

There is no solid wood frame, as the original did not have one. The cushions are designed to appear somewhat plump rather than hard and square. Attention to detail matters when faithfully reproducing an original icon. Like the original, the tubular steel wraps from the arm to the back, bent with heat to form the round curve. This contrasts with reproductions that weld two pieces of steel at more of a 45-degree angle to form the curve.

Aniline Dyeing involves soaking the hides in transparent aniline, allowing color to absorb into the natural hide. Top Grain Aniline leather is then stain-protected to minimize liquid absorption during everyday use but does not require imitation grain stamping methods, which imprint a Faux grain over most of the leather surface. Without synthetic topical coatings, it breathes naturally, making it comfortable for seating. It is soft, supple, durable, and pliable, maintaining the characteristics of pure leather.
