Tulip Mid Century Modern Side Chair

Designed by Eero Saarinen in 1955 to complement the Tulip Table. The chair won design awards from the Design Center Stuttgart in 1962, the Museum of Modern Art in 1969, and the Federal Design Award for Industrial Art in 1969. Known for its futuristic curves, it gained further popularity from its appearance on Star Trek between 1966 and 1969.

Making the Icon

Many original Tulip chairs, made of fiberglass, are still in use today. Most reproductions now use ABS plastic, which can break under stress. Eero Saarinen chose fiberglass for its deep sheen and durability. Kardiel’s reproduction adheres to the original design dimensions and materials. Although fiberglass chairs cost more than plastic, they offer greater longevity and a better appearance. The chairs feature solid white molded fiberglass shells on an aluminum cast base, with a smooth, glossy finish.

About Cashmere Wool Tweed

Cashmere wool is obtained from Cashmere goats, historically known as Capra hircus laniger. These goats produce a double fleece: a fine, soft undercoat mingled with a coarser outer coat called Guard Hair. The fine undercoat must be de-haired, a mechanical process that separates the coarse hairs from the fine ones. The resulting premium cashmere is then dyed and spun into yarn.
