VTG, Japanese Black Lacquer Handpainted Decorative Box. Made in Japan in the 1950s. Inside of lid is marked "Made in Japan". This gorgeous box is coated in black lacquer with a handpainted design on the top. The imagery depicts dragons on either side of a central flower, what appears to be a tiger lily. Perhaps symbolizing the dragon and the tiger which are ancient symbols of yin and yang. The top is bordered with a geometric patterns including checkerboards at the corners and a squiggly version of greek key motifs on the inner border. The application of the paint has been done with different size paint brushes to achieve fine lines as well thicker coverage. The artwork is truly stunning and evokes an old world feeling of times past. The hinges and lock mechanism are silver metal, probably stainless steel. The decorative lock plate was originally painted in gold and red. This functional box could be used to store jewellery or even in a home office for elastic bands. It would be very sophisticated styled on a stack of books or on a coffee table. This type of chinoiserie objet is timeless and would work beautifully in any decor setting.
