Kardiel
Tulip Dining Set, 28" Table & 2 Side Chairs, Red
Eero initially designed the chairs in the mid-50s and the table followed in the early 60s. Shortly thereafter, design awards from The Design Center Stuttgart in 1962, the Museum of Modern Art in 1969, and the Federal Design Award for industrial art in 1969 recognized the series. The Tulip chair is famous for its futuristic curves, and between 1966 and 1969, it gained further popularity from appearances on Star Trek. Today, it's acknowledged as a modern classic dining icon. Replicas using fiberglass and cast aluminum, akin to the original, are built to last generations. Many original Tulip Table sets, initially made from fiberglass, remain in use. Before production, Eero realized that a fiberglass base wasn't suitable to support the table, leading him to use a cast aluminum base. Through experimenting with a Rilsan-type coating over aluminum, he matched the fiberglass's gloss and color. Kardiel reproduces these chairs with pure solid white molded fiberglass shells on a cast aluminum base, true to the original. Most replicas today are made from ABS plastic, which tends to break under stress. While fiberglass chairs are more costly, the difference in longevity and appearance justifies the cost. Features include a 360-degree swivel mechanism for smooth movement and removable cushions for easy maintenance. Dimensions and material specifications are kept true to the original design.
