Eero's designs for the chairs emerged in the mid-1950s, followed by the table in the early 60s. The series quickly gained acclaim, winning awards from The Design Center Stuttgart in 1962, the Museum of Modern Art in 1969, and the Federal Design Award in 1969. Known for its futuristic curves, the Tulip chair gained popularity in the late 1960s partly due to its appearance on the Star Trek bridge. Today, it stands as a classic modern icon in dining. Reproductions crafted from fiberglass and cast aluminum like the originals endure for generations.

Creating the Iconic Modernist Table Set

Original Tulip Table sets made from fiberglass still serve today. Before production, Eero realized the fiberglass base couldn't support the table. He switched to a cast aluminum base with a Rilsan coating, achieving color consistency with the fiberglass. Kardiel's reproduction includes a wool seat cushion, which differs from most Tulip Series reproductions using plastic bodies and synthetic cushions.

Kardiel reproductions maintain the original's design and material content, featuring white molded fiberglass shells and cast aluminum bases. Many Tulip reproductions today use ABS plastic, which can break under stress. Though fiberglass Tulip chairs are pricier, they offer longevity and superior appearance.

Cashmere wool comes from "Cashmere goats," historically known as Capra hircus laniger. These goats produce a double coat, with a soft undercoat and a coarser outer layer called Guard Hair. De-hairing is a mechanical process that separates coarse hair, preparing the fine undercoat for dyeing and yarn production.
