Tulip Modernist Table & 2 Armchairs

The chairs were designed by Eero in the mid-50s and the table followed in the early 60s. The series quickly gained recognition, winning awards from The Design Center Stuttgart in 1962, the Museum of Modern Art in 1969, and the Federal Design Award for industrial art in 1969. The Tulip chair is known for its futuristic curves and was popularized further by its appearance on the bridge of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek between 1966 and 1969. Today, it is widely recognized as a modern classic in dining. These clean, modern classics, when reproduced with fiberglass and cast aluminum like the original, can last for generations.

Crafting the Modernist Table Sets

Many original Tulip Table sets made of fiberglass are still in use today. Eero realized that while fiberglass ensured color and sheen consistency, it could not support the table base. He switched to a cast aluminum base and used a Rilsan type coating to match the gloss and color of the fiberglass. Kardiel's reproduction seat cushion is made of wool, unlike many reproductions that use plastic for the chair body and synthetic fabric for the cushion.

Kardiel’s reproduction respects the original design and materials. The chairs feature solid white molded fiberglass shells on an aluminum cast base. Most reproductions today use ABS plastic, which can break at stress points. Fiberglass chairs, although more expensive, offer greater longevity and appearance. Fiberglass was used in the original designs.

About Cashmere Wool Tweed

Cashmere wool fiber is obtained from Cashmere goats, historically known as Capra hircus laniger. These goats produce a double fleece consisting of a fine, soft undercoat mingled with a coarser outer coating called Guard Hair. The fine under-down must be de-haired, a mechanical process that separates the coarse hairs from the fine hair. After de-hairing, the premium cashmere is ready to be dyed and converted into yarn.
