Eero first designed the Tulip chairs in the mid-50s and later introduced the matching table in the early 60s. Shortly after, the series received awards from The Design Center Stuttgart in 1962 and was further acclaimed by the Museum of Modern Art in 1969 and the Federal Design Award for industrial art. The Tulip chair is celebrated for its modern curves, and it gained additional popularity from its appearance on the bridge of Star Trek. Today, it stands as a modern classic in dining furniture, with reproductions lasting generations when made of fiberglass and cast aluminum like the original.

Many of the original Tulip Table sets made of fiberglass are still in use today. Early on, Eero realized the fiberglass base wouldn’t support the table's weight, prompting a switch to a cast aluminum base. By applying a Rilsan type coating over the aluminum, he replicated the gloss and color of fiberglass successfully. Just like the original production, Kardiel uses wool for the seat cushion. It is noteworthy that most reproductions in the Tulip Series opt for plastic bodies and synthetic fabric cushions.

Kardiel's reproduction remains faithful to the original’s design and material. The chairs, like the authentic ones, feature pure white molded fiberglass shells atop a cast aluminum base. Most Tulip series reproductions today are made from ABS plastic, which can break under stress over time. While fiberglass chairs are pricier, the difference in durability and appearance is worth it.

Product features include a style that evokes mid-century modern design with a true-to-original cast aluminum base. The upper shell is molded from 100% dimension-true fiberglass, and the table top is also high-polish fiberglass of 1.5” thickness. The multi-density foam seat cushion is upholstered in tweed cashmere wool, consisting of 50% cashmere wool and 50% synthetic fiber. Chair bases swivel 360 degrees, and seat cushions are removable, facilitating maintenance. Table dimensions are approximately 32" in diameter with various seat cushion colors available.
