Eero designed the chairs in the mid-50s and later added the table in the early 60s. The series quickly earned recognition with design awards from the Design Center Stuttgart in 1962, and acknowledgments from the Museum of Modern Art in 1969, as well as the Federal Design Award for industrial art that same year. Known for its futuristic curves, the Tulip chair was often featured in Star Trek from 1966 to 1969. Today, it is acknowledged as a modern classic in dining sets. Clean, modern design. Many original Tulip Table sets, primarily made of fiberglass, are still functional today. Eero initially discovered that a fiberglass base was insufficient for the table's weight, hence the switch to a cast aluminum base. He used a Rilsan coating over the aluminum to match the gloss and color of the fiberglass. Kardiel's reproduction mirrors the original with wool seat cushions, while many other reproductions opt for plastic bodies and synthetic fabric cushions. Kardiel's fidelity to the original design includes using solid white molded fiberglass shells on an aluminum base. Most reproductions today are made from ABS plastic, which tend to fail with ongoing use. Authentic fiberglass Tulip chairs may have a higher cost than plastic versions, but the disparity is minor compared to the longevity and aesthetic advantages. The original Tulip chairs were crafted from fiberglass. The Kardiel reproduction features Mid-Century Modern style with a cast aluminum base coated in Rilsan for color consistency. It has a molded fiberglass tabletop and a durable multi-density foam seat cushion wrapped in tweed cashmere wool. The chair base includes a 360-degree swivel mechanism and a removable seat cushion for ease of maintenance. Table dimensions are nominally 32 inches, with an actual size of 31.50 inches.
