Elektra Mid-Century Modern Sofa
Kardiel's reproduction of this mid-century modern icon features plump down feather overstuffed cushions. The seat platform uses an original metal Sinuous no sag 'S Coil' suspension system encased in high-density foam. Both back and seat cushions are upholstered on both sides, making them reversible. Stiletto legs are narrower where they meet the floor, with rear legs angled slightly toward the back.
Viewing Elektra from the side reveals styling that goes beyond typical square modern designs. The arm's curves and low profile contribute to the design and comfort of the entire frame. Thin arms angle slightly forward as they rise, then roll gently backward and slightly downward until reaching the back. A handcrafted solid kiln-dried hardwood frame features metal and dowel joinery methods.
Making the Icon
Originally produced in 1958, Elektra is modern with midcentury elegance. Every detail, from the height and width of the stiletto legs to the backward sloping low-slung arms and real wood undercarriage, was faithfully reproduced. The arms' front and rear edges are rounded in true midcentury modern style. From the side angle, the back gently angles to cradle the body comfortably. Seat cushions are button-free, while the back cushion has one row of three buttons. Both seat and back cushions are removable, reversible, and feature rear zippers.
Whether placed in the center of a room or against a wall, the solid gently curved varnished wood undercarriage adds a handcrafted artisan design element. The wooden midcentury modern flair leg is perfect for suspending Elektra’s frame from the floor. The leg flair angle was carefully measured to stay authentic to the original 1950s design. The timeless splayed leg design with the correct outward angle pulls all of Elektra’s modernism features together, capturing the true feeling of the period.
About Tartan Plaid
Tartan is a pattern of crisscrossed horizontal and vertical bands. Originally woven in wool, tartans are now made from various materials. The fabric is durable and easy to maintain, woven in a simple twill pattern of two over, two under the warp, advancing one thread with each pass.
