Mid-Century Modern Halyard Flag Rope Lounge Chair

Kardiel's Flag Halyard chair includes the Genuine Top Grain Aniline Leather pillow and sheepskin throw as shown. Built with a solid stainless steel frame and 240 meters of textured flag line, it mirrors the grace of the original design. The “Halyard Rope Chair,” unveiled in Denmark in 1960, quickly became iconic. Its wide-set and low frame provide excellent comfort for an afternoon rest, especially with the sheepskin throw and down feather-filled headrest.

DESIGNING THE ICON

An interesting story surrounds its design by Danish furniture designer Wegner. Allegedly, Wegner conceived the design on a beach in the late 1940s, using a dune and some sea-tested sailing rope found on site. A ‘halyard’ is a line that hoists or covers a sail. The design, both brilliant and unique, led to the Halyard Rope chair's production in the 1950s.

You might have seen Hans Wegner's Flag Halyard Chair in design books or movie sets. The combination of rope, tubular steel, sheepskin, and linen remains unique in mainstream furniture crafting. Wegner aimed to demonstrate his ability to create innovative, practical, and comfortable furniture using a variety of materials.

ABOUT GENUINE TOP GRAIN ANILINE LEATHER

A small percentage of the world’s leather supply is suitable for 100% Top Grain Aniline upholstered furniture. Aniline Dyeing involves soaking hides in transparent aniline, allowing color to absorb into the natural hide. Top Grain Aniline leather is then stain-protected to minimize liquid absorption, without needing imitation grain stamping. Without synthetic coatings, it breathes naturally, making it comfortable for seating. It remains soft, supple, durable, and pliable, maintaining the characteristics of pure leather.
