Mid-Century Modern Halyard Flag Lounge Chair & Ottoman

The Kardiel Flag Halyard chair and ottoman comes with everything you see in the picture, including the Genuine Top Grain Aniline Leather pillow and the sheepskin throw. Perfectly balanced built with a solid stainless steel frame and 240 meters of the textured flag line, this modern industrial beauty mimics the grace of the original. The “Halyard Rope Chair” was upon its unveiling in Denmark in 1960, destined for iconic status. The wide-set and low frame are excellent for an afternoon rest, especially when matched with the comfort of a sheepskin throw and down feather filled headrest.

DESIGNING THE ICON

There's an interesting, though possibly apocryphal story attached to its design by the Danish furniture designer Wegner. The story goes that Wegner conceived this design while on the beach towards the end of the 1940s. He supposedly modeled the grid-like seat in a dune, presumably with some sea tested sailing rope that was found on site. (A ‘halyard’ is a line that hoists or covers a sail.) The design was brilliant and off the beaten path. The Halyard Rope chair went into production shortly after in the 1950s.

You may have seen or come across Hans Wegner's Flag Halyard Chair in design books, or perhaps you have seen the design strategically placed in movie sets. The unlikely combination of rope, tubular steel, sheepskin, and linen is still unprecedented in mainstream furniture crafting. Wegner’s motivation in using such contrasting materials was not to exploit their textural interplay, but simply to demonstrate his ability to design innovative, practical, and comfortable furniture

ABOUT GENUINE TOP GRAIN ANILINE LEATHER

A small percent of the world’s leather supply is of high enough quality for 100% Top Grain Aniline upholstered furniture. Aniline Dyeing is the process of soaking the hides in transparent aniline, which allows color to absorb into the natural hide. Top Grain Aniline leather is then topical stain protected to minimize liquid absorption during everyday use but does not require imitation grain stamping methods, which imprint a Faux grain over the majority of the leather surface. Without all the synthetic topical coatings, it breathes naturally making it comfortable for seating. It is soft, supple, durable and pliable, maintaining the characteristics of pure leather.
