Womb Mid-Century Modern Chair & Ottoman
Finnish Modern Furniture Designer Eero Saarinen created the Womb Chair, originally known as the Wombat Chair in 1948. The Womb Chair's organic form is representative of the mid-century Scandinavian modernism style of furniture using synthetic materials to create inspired forms.
Making the Icon
The original designer believed strongly that the whole field of design is all one body. He had three design principles – Function, Structure and being part of the time. Its design consists of molded fiberglass shell covered with foam and then upholstered. The chair and ottoman are supported by a bent tubular frame. To increase the comfort, Eero also designed the chair with loose cushions and a coordinating ottoman. It was named Womb Chair because it envelopes allowing you to curl up and relax in comfort.
Eero Saarinen designed with the human body form in mind. A simple concept yes, but many designers prefer aesthetics to functionality. In nearly every case, a piece of furniture that rises to become a classic has both striking artistic form as well as function. Its organic form is representative of the mid-century Scandinavian modernism style of furniture using synthetic materials to create inspired forms.
About Plush Velvet Premium
Velvet, in general, is a soft pile fabric that has been woven since the beginning of the middle ages. It is soft to the touch with a distinctive nap. It is woven on a loom unique to velvet fabrics. Often used on modern furniture where a clean appearance is desired; Micro-velvet is a form of standard velvet fabric. The micro-velvet variety is considered a lower maintenance fabric. It features a low nap which reduces the light and dark variation of a traditional crushed velvet. The fabric is durable, forms well with curve & tufting work. It features a warm appearance and a soft to the touch surface. Velvet as a term refers to the fabric style, not the fabric content. Velvets are made from a variety of fabric types..
