Vintage Chair by Michele De Lucchi for Memphis
The "First Chair" is one of the best-known Memphis design classics and can be found in almost every design collection. The chair was designed by Italian architect and designer Michele de Lucchi (1951) for Memphis Milano, Italy in 1983. The Memphis design group was initiated by Ettore Sottsass in 1981. The best-known members of the Memphis group included Michele de Lucchi, Martine Bedin and Matteo Thun. Memphis created numerous imaginative designs as a counter-reaction to the high-tech design of the 1970s. Basic geometric shapes such as the cone, sphere or cube were often combined with each other and with geometric plastic laminates and bold colors. Our "First Chair" is an early edition for Memphis Milano. Silver-grey lacquered metal, wooden back and seat, black lacquered wooden spheres on the armrests. Manufacturer's name on the underside of the seat. Good condition with some clear signs of wear from contact with the edge of a table. All in all, however, the chair is in absolutely acceptable condition, with a clear patina. Seat height 45cm.
